The SOEP-IS Samples in Detail ****************************** On this page, you can find some of the relevant information about each subsample of the SOEP-IS. This includes the sample population, the sampling design, the field period for the first survey year, and the original survey modes. Next to the name of each sample, we have stated the sample number of the *sample1* variable in square brackets. .. _Sample E 1998: E 1998 Refreshment [10, 11] ------------------------------------- The foundation of the Innovation Survey as separate study happened in 2011. However, the first samples moved to SOEP-IS were part of SOEP-Core before. Sample E is the first sample that was designed to be representative for all private households in both East and West Germany. It is the first of several regular refreshment samples drawn to increase the overall size of the SOEP, compensate for panel attrition, and cover population changes, e.g. due to migration. It is also the first sample in which the Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) was implemented. To study mode effects, households of sample E were randomly allocated to CAPI and PAPI mode, resulting in two groups (10 = PAPI, 11 = CAPI). - Sampling Design: Multistage stratified sampling procedure based on the ADM-Design - *First Stage:* Stratified by federal states (NUTS 1), governmental regions (NUTS 2), and municipality size. Clustering of 125 PSUs - *Second Stage:* Random walk in each PSU (selected unit: household) - Field Period: April to September 1998 - Initial Survey Mode: Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) and Paper-and-Pencil Interviewing (PAPI) .. _Sample I 2009: I 2009 Innovation Sample [19] ------------------------------------- Sample I "Innovation Sample" was initially also part of SOEP-Core and covers private households in Germany. A disproportional sampling design was implemented in order to increase the number of migrant households in the SOEP. In order to do so, an analysis of family names - "onomastic procedure" - was applied. - Sampling Design: Multistage stratified sampling procedure based on the ADM-Design - *First Stage:* Stratified by federal states (NUTS 1), governmental regions (NUTS 2), and municipality size. Clustering of 250 PSUs - *Second Stage:* Random walk for address listing in each PSU; oversampling of migrant households such that the share of migrants for each PSU is doubled (selected unit: household) - Field Period: September 2009 to January 2010 - Initial Survey Mode: Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) .. _Sample S1 2012: S1 Refresher 2012 [22] ------------------------------------- Sample S1 "Refresher 2012" covers private households in Germany. - Sampling Design: Multistage stratified sampling procedure based on the ADM-Design - *First Stage:* Stratified by federal states (NUTS 1), governmental regions (NUTS 2), and municipality size. Clustering of 125 PSUs - *Second Stage:* Random walk for address listing in each PSU - Field Period: June 2012 to September 2012 - Initial Survey Mode: Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) .. _Sample S2 2013: S2 Refresher 2013 [25] ------------------------------------- Sample S2 "Refresher 2013" covers private households in Germany. - Sampling Design: Multistage stratified sampling procedure based on the ADM-Design - *First Stage:* Stratified by federal states (NUTS 1), governmental regions (NUTS 2), and municipality size. Clustering of 125 PSUs - *Second Stage:* Random walk for address listing in each PSU - Field Period: August 2013 to March 2014 - Initial Survey Mode: Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) .. _Sample S3 2014: S3 Refresher 2014 [26] ------------------------------------- Sample S3 "Refresher 2014" covers private households in Germany. - Sampling Design: Multistage stratified sampling procedure based on the ADM-Design - *First Stage:* Stratified by federal states (NUTS 1), governmental regions (NUTS 2), and municipality size. Clustering of 125 PSUs - *Second Stage:* Random walk for address listing in each PSU - Field Period: September 2014 to April 2015 - Initial Survey Mode: Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) .. _Sample BIP 2014: BIP Bonn Intervention Panel 2014 [28] ------------------------------------- Sample BIP "Bonn Intervention Panel 2014" was not originally drawn as part of SOEP, but in a separate study at the University of Bonn. The first wave of the BIP at SOEP-IS represents the third wave of the project overall. The sample is predominantly limited to Cologne and Bonn and covers mother-child pairs (starting at the primary school age until age 25 and beyond). The first two waves were conducted in interview rooms in Cologne and Bonn, which explains the geographical limitation. The aim of the project is to evaluate intervention programs for supporting child development. Due to the separate status of the sample, the corresponding cases were not weighted. Eventually, the BIP has not been part of SOEP-IS since 2021. - Sampling Design: mother-child pairs based on information from local registration offices (Einwohnermeldeämter) - Field Period: September 2014 to February 2015 - Initial Survey Mode: Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) .. _Sample S4 2016: S4 Refresher 2016 [32] ------------------------------------- Sample S4 "Refresher 2016" covers private households in Germany. - Sampling Design: Multistage stratified sampling procedure based on the ADM-Design - *First Stage:* Stratified by federal states (NUTS 1), governmental regions (NUTS 2), and municipality size. Clustering of 125+125 PSUs - *Second Stage:* Random walk for address listing in each PSU - Field Period: October 2016 to March 2017 - Initial Survey Mode: Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) .. _Sample S5 2020: S5 Refresher ESS 2020 [38] ------------------------------------- Sample S5 "Refresher ESS 2020" is based on the integration of former participants of the European Social Survey (ESS) into the SOEP. After the sample has been integrated in the first wave of its participation in SOEP-IS, it is weighted normally like the other samples. - Sampling Design: The SOEP-IS sample was made up of those persons who expressed interest in participating in SOEP within the framework of the ESS 2018 downstream short survey. These so-called anchor persons formed the initial SOEP-IS sample which was expanded by including other household members. - Field Period: April 2020 to September 2020 - Initial Survey Mode: Mixed Mode Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI) followed by telephone Interviewing (CAPI-by-phone) .. _Sample S6 2023: S6 Refresher 2023 [46] ------------------------------------- Sample S6 "Refresher 2023" covers private households in Germany. Unlike other SOEP-IS refreshment samples, no separate sampling was carried out; instead, sample R from SOEP Core 2022 served as the basis. Households not contacted for SOEP-Core were used as the gross sample for SOEP IS. The gross sample was adjusted for SOEP-IS, as Sample R originally features oversampling of lignite mining districts and the age group of 18 to 45. This oversampling was corrected before it became part of SOEP-IS one year later. However, this time difference meant that at the time of the first survey, it was a representative sample of people aged 19 to 71. - Sampling Design: based on information from registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) - *First Stage:* Stratification of municipalities by federal state, selection of municipalities - *Second Stage:* Stratification by age groups 18 to 70 years of age - Field Period: May 2023 to November 2023 - Initial Survey Mode: Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI)
